Download Australia 2019 has lost its major headliner Ozzy Osbourne today, following the cancellation of his NO MORE TOURS 2 in Europe due to health concerns.
“Ozzy recently developed pneumonia and has spent some time in hospital. Thankfully he is now through the worst part, his doctors have advised that he stay at home to recuperate for a full six weeks with no travel,” says wife and manager Sharon Osbourne.
As a result, he has cancelled all dates in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
“We are extremely disappointed to have to bring this news to you, our Download family, however it should go without saying, Ozzy’s health and wellbeing is number one. We wish Ozzy all the best in his recovery and hope he is back to full health as soon as possible,” reads a statement by festival organisers.
“It is impossible to replace Ozzy Osbourne at any time, but three weeks out from Download there is no chance of us securing an act to replace the headline slot.”
Festival organisers have brought Australian hard rock act Airbourne as an additional band, with only three weeks’ notice.
The boys from Warrnambool, Victoria have had a successful career in the touring circuit, and have won the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award for Best Debut Album, and Best New Band from Classic Rock magazine. They’ve appeared at Wacken Open Air, heavy metal’s flagship festival, and earned Top 40 and Top 20 gongs around the world.
Festival organisers have also offered ticket holders a refund, with requests open until Sunday 24th February, 2019. Refund requests are available via Ticketmaster.
Download is also offering offer all current ticket holders a merchandise voucher to the value of $45 plus postage and handling, available for use at 24hundred.net.
These vouchers will be available from 9am AEDT on Monday 4th March, 2019. The offer is limited to current, not future ticket holders, and cannot be redeemed at the event.
John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne shot to prominence as vocalist for seminal metal band Black Sabbath. After his departure in 1979, he launched a successful solo career, releasing chart-topping albums such as Blizzard of Ozz and Bark at the Moon. He and his family later gained notoriety in reality TV series, The Osbournes, showing a “fly-on-the-wall” depiction of the family Osbourne.
