Luca Brasi have called their second full length By a Thread, but it’s probably a sarcastic title, because they’ve never sounded stronger. Since their 2011 debut Extended Family, the band’s style of earnest working man punk—somewhere between Hot Water Music and Bruce Springsteen with a hint of Modest Mouse’s artsy indie cred—has captured the imagination of the Australian scene. That popularity has presented these guys the chance to play to bigger, more captive, audiences, and Luca Brasi sound like their confidence has been bolstered by that interest. Cuts like Death Rattle and Here’s Looking at You Kid Rock sound completely self-assured. There’s not a hint of doubt on this record that these guys should be doing something other than what they’re doing on this record—even if there is a riff on One Set of Rules that sounds a little too familiar to Birds Of Tokyo.
