Lots for fans to enjoy

For those who loved Skydancer and Earthwalker, Ark is an easy choice to add to their collection. “Go fuck your doomsday” is on the nose but Warcry’s bridge seemingly takes inspiration from Tool to balance out a little subtlety. The record breathes more than the claustrophobic Skydancer (take Flow for example), or compare the menacing and more open atmosphere of Overthrow to Badlands. A tasty guitar riff in Frequency is more than welcome but disappears as shortly as it arrives. In Hearts Wake’s latest has moments of glory with flickering moments of experimentation; Arrow shirks vocals from Jake Taylor completely to allow Kyle Erich a moment to shine. The chorus of Passage stands as his strongest moment in a moment reminiscent of last year’s Refuge.

We’re blessed with so many bands attempting to break the mould, any band that stays the same is bound to be left behind. Thankfully there are moments to compare their progression throughout Ark. Totality could have been pulled from any of their past records; it’s leagues away from the Persian vibes of Elemental. The inclusion of a sitar elevates the song and is a glimpse into what realms can be explored with a willingness to push forward. The message of environmentalism itself is still the strongest part of In Hearts Wake, and Ark ensures long time fans will still hold strong to the ship.
