FOUR YEAR STRONG // Four Year Strong

Four Year Strong — Four Year Strong

(Pure Noise Records)

“[T]he album is something that long-time fans (and those of us who finally found the courage to pick up a Four Year Strong album) can easily get behind.”

When a band’s been around for as long as Four Year Strong has, the pressure to create a musical masterpiece is undeniable. Despite the stress and deadlines that continued to build, Four Year Strong, the band’s fifth full-length self-titled album, does not show any wear and tear of  their hair-pulling late nights poured into recording. Instead, the album is something that long-time fans (and those of us who finally found the courage to pick up a Four Year Strong album) can easily get behind. There’s a good amount of nostalgia in songs like Stolen Credit Card and Here’s to Swimming with Bowlegged Women with fast-paced punk tunes, mixed with gang vocals and a perfect mix of rough yelling from lead singers Dan O’Connor and Alan Day. If the unique song titles are any indication of the band’s care-free nature, then lyrics like “Will we go down like the rest of them? Living up to the little mistakes, fitting into the moulds I’ve broken time and time again? Not if I can help it” from I’m a Big, Bright, Shining Star definitely mirrors the “look on the bright side” mentality of FYS. Album closer, Go Down in History, not so subtly tells listeners that Four Year Strong will be the go-to album for this 90s-inspired Massachusetts-based band. They’re right.
