Plenty of devils in the city of angels!

FIDLAR are one of the latest garage rock outfits La-La land has to offer.

Releasing their debut self-titled album in 2013, they followed up with Too in 2015 and are just about to drop their third L.P Almost Free. This time around the band employed Grammy nominated producer Ricky Reed to polish their sound and give them a fresh new direction.

This is very much the soundtrack for a city populated by seedy people, it might be relatable to those who are right amongst this lifestyle but it doesn’t quite translate to people who may have no experience of such a place.

Illinois artist K-Flay adds some timely female perspective on Called you Twice a song about lead singer Zac Carper’s life changing break up with his then girlfriend that feels like the perfect theme for a duet with a punk rock singer. On Almost Free FIDLAR sing about topics exclusively related to living in Los Angeles such as Get off My Rock telling the story of the rich people in town doing pretty much whatever they like including evicting people out of their neighbourhoods in order to redevelop and profit or Can’t you See about a megalomaniac musician who forces people to listen to his music on his iPhone at parties while high on Cocaine.

The songwriting duties are shared between Zac and lead guitarist/deputy vocalist Elvis Kuehn, neither one of them takes themselves too seriously; the lyrics are mainly light sarcasm in traditional garage rock and blues styles executed by Elvis whilst Zac brings in more contemporary sounds influenced by soundclap rap.

This is very much the soundtrack for a city populated by seedy people, it might be relatable to those who are right amongst this lifestyle but it doesn’t quite translate to people who may have no experience of such a place. These tongue and cheek collection of songs definitely have some catchy guitar rhythms but that’s about all the album really offers.
