BURY TOMORROW// Runes

BURY TOMORROW: Runes
(Nuclear Blast)

England, you old minx, popping out another metalcore group that manage to be resonant instead of whiny, and dynamic rather than noisy. Seriously, get on this shit ASAP, everyone. This is an extremely impressive disc. ‘Soft’ vocalist Jason Cameron sounds like the apprentice of gospel-trained Sevendust front man Lajon Witherspoon. Watcher could have been performed by a young Witherspoon and that is a big compliment, my friend. Cameron’s talents would translate to any genre. It’s lucky for us weirdos that they’re served here with a brutal arsenal of solid shred and riffs. The performance of new guitarist Kristan Dawson is ace, all technical abilities and sonic idiosyncrasies. They are nicely showcased on The Torch, piercing the air for a few seconds like an unexpected, fleeting free-fall. Maybe unusually for a screamer, you can actually hear what the fuck Dani Winter-Bates is screeching, too. He produces savage hisses and growls that would make Dez Fafara beam, while maintaining a relatively crisp sound, exemplified by the fury of Our Gift. Each song is an obvious counterpart to the others, but this is only an obstacle if you’re craving versatility. On the whole, the album is a heaving force of precision and it has hooks for hands. It’s solid, but nothing new is really happening here. Back to the basics, this is a declaration of undying loyalty to the genre that influenced the lads, with some huge injections of contemporary melody.
