Dear Joey and Brooke, What a wild ride! I just wanted to write to express …
Buckcherry have seen it all. Since the band’s first shows in 1995, they’ve had top ten hits, critical failures, a break-up and a reunion; bouncing between major labels as the music industry as they knew it unravelled around them.
“Now we’re our own bosses, it’s so much better for this band,” says singer Josh Todd down the line from his home in California.
“Technology has changed a lot of things and we don’t have a controlled market anymore,” he continues.
“As an artist it kind of sucks because a big chunk of our revenue has been cut out and we’ve had to constantly re-think the model. However, when you’re working for a major label, you have more people to answer to and we had to go through a lot of battles to do what we wanted to do.”

“People have been telling us “oh you can’t sell rock records, rock is dead” ever since our first record, but we’ve been this rock band through all this adversity.”

Buckcherry’s new album Rock ‘N’ Roll is proof of that. Produced by the band’s guitarist Keith Nelson, Todd says having someone inside the band steering the ship is the best and quickest way to get things done.
“We’ve always been pretty hands-on, creatively, and we wouldn’t keep using Keith if he wasn’t good at doing what he does. He has a real knack for capturing great performances, which is great because I really can’t stand being in the studio. With Keith I can just get in there, do my thing, do it well and then just get out. A quick process really works for us.”
In the meantime, Todd says the band is ready to get back to Australia’s “rowdy rock fans” for the first time in years, and keep working to keep the Buckcherry show on the road.
“People have been telling us “oh you can’t sell rock records, rock is dead” ever since our first record, but we’ve been this rock band through all this adversity.”
