So many scribes scribble “Hellyeah is Vinnie Paul’s band”. If you think the same, you are a fucking idiot. The most famous member must get a controlling share in the band. Like some kind of noblesse oblige for the guy with the most Facebook friends. No. This is Tom Maxwell and Chad Gray’s band. Judging by Tom’s approximation of Blood for Blood you’d think it would just sound like MudNothingVayneFace. At times, that’s exactly what it does sound like. It’s largely free of the herp and derp that made it so untouchable to half-smart metalheads. Chad mewls “I’ve been locked up, sequestered and pushed the fuck around” on lush slowie Moth, proving he’s got more dimension than a cardboard cut-out NASCAR driver. Fans expecting slightly harder and even stupider Alter Bridge will have their heads blown off by Pantera-grade belter Say When. Vox and geets are produced to an inch of their lives, but nu-metal’s red-headed orphans will lap it right up. Who knew the band would flourish excising them uh-hyuck hillbillies?
