ARCHITECTS // Aussie Fan Tribute Touches Dan Searle’s Heart

In the ultimate act of compassion a dedicated Architects’ fan held up a banner that would bring drummer Dan Searle to tears.

Nineteen year old Mel Thompson attended Brisbane’s Bring Me The Horizon headline gig on Friday night where she displayed a ‘RIP Tom Searle’ banner during the support act’s set.

For those not aware, Architects’ guitarist and songwriter Tom Searle passed away from cancer about a month ago. Twin brother and drummer Dan Searle broke the news on Facebook, revealing that Tom had been battling cancer for the past three years.

Despite the band’s loss, Architects remained committed to their Australian tour.

At the Riverstage concert Thompson caught the attention of Architects’ frontman Sam Carter, and eventually Dan.

When the UK metalcore act finished their set, Dan made his way to the barrier where he embraced the young fan. Mel gave Hysteria her account of the moments before, during and after the touching encounter:

“I held my sign up after the last song. I could tell Dan didn’t look as happy as he used to be on stage for obvious reasons. I couldn’t imagine him playing without his brother. But when he saw the sign he gave me a smile. Sam also smiled and pointed at the sign. After an emotional speech by Sam which brought tears to everyone’s eyes they played their last song Gone With The Wind. When they finished I saw Dan get up and walk towards the front of the stage. He threw one of his drumsticks into the crowd then proceeded to walk towards me and handed me his other drum stick then opened his arms for a hug. I immediately hugged him over the barrier expecting it to be a quick ‘thank you hug’ until Dan hugged me tighter and began to cry in my arms. We were both hardcore crying as it was very emotional and I told him ‘he’s (Tom) still with us’ and we just didn’t let go for ages. Everyone around us was in tears saying ‘you’re breaking my heart’. Eventually we said goodbye and Dan went backstage.”

A picture of Mel holding her banner was then posted on Instagram by Dan, expressing his gratitude to Australian fans and the one dedicated punter:
