STEPSON // PREMIERE—Video For ‘Come With Me’

Hysteria is proud to premiere the video for Come With Me, the latest single from melodic hardcore favourites Stepson.

The band have also announced a string of tour dates this July/August following the release, and are set to hit NSW, ACT and VIC (see below for details).

Stepson’s last project The Beautiful Lie leaned more towards a subtle electronic sound than they’d ever experimented with before. Come With Me is a return to the sound that fans originally fell in love with, after the experimentation of their last EP. Speaking to Hysteria, vocalist Brock Conroy says of The Beautiful Lie and how it came about: “The original idea for the follow up of our Echoes in an Empty Room EP was to write an acoustic EP funnily enough. While writing the ialacks we realised that it could come across as cliché, so we started from scratch and tried to create something that would both please our thirst for experimentation and something that would throw off and entice our audience and hopefully invite a whole new demographic of listeners into our fanbase. I feel that if you write or if you’re a fan of music you can explore and enjoy completely contrasting genres without limitation and I hope we achieved that.”

Speaking personally to the band’s fans, Conroy is heartfelt in his admiration. “I just really want to say thank you to anyone that has supported us by listening to our music. came to a show, bought a shirt or just shared a few kind words with us. You’re all incredible.”

On the track’s influences, it’s not hard to see the effects of The Beautiful Lie in Come With Me. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Callan Orr of Avalanche Studios, the vibey elements blend seamlessly with the crushing breakdown that precedes them; fans of old and new material will find a lot to love. Speaking about the electronic hush of The Beautiful Lie and its mixture with melodic hardcore, Conroy says: “The Beautiful Lie was something that not only myself but everyone in the band was really proud of, so inviting [those elements] into our brand of fast punk was never an issue. I feel like it is integral to what makes us Stepson and our mantra of never limiting ourselves to one type of music…The inclusion of Jayden’s voice in our newer music also really helps opens up our sound and we play to each other’s strengths, both in a live setting and in the studio which we think creates a really nice dynamic vocally for the band.”

The lyrics themselves are a classic example of why Stepson has grown so fast in the local community. The honesty behind the words that fans jump on top of each other to scream at local shows has always been the backbone of the band’s appeal. “Come With Me is about the constant self-deprecation you face when you think you aren’t good enough for someone you truly care about,” says Conroy in a statement.

“For me personally, I thought I was doing the right thing but the extent of what I created was ultimately the worst thing I could’ve done. I’ve always been one to ignore issues, particularly to do with my own feelings, but little did I know it is quite possibly the worst and most harsh things you can do to a person that cares about you. The permanent fear of not knowing whether or not you’re good enough for someone who has treated you with nothing but love and respect is completely horrifying and I do not wish it upon anyone. In turn, I loved and lost someone due to my constant push and pull and this song is about how I felt during that very trying time.”

Unsurprisingly, fans will be clamouring for more Stepson. Thankfully they aren’t the type of band to leave them hanging. Well, not too much. There has to be a little mystery about where they go next right? “As a band we’ve never wanted to write the same song twice, so to speak? We are currently writing for a new release and I’m extremely excited to say that Stepson is really opening itself up into unexplored territory and I’m ecstatic about what we are currently creating,” says Conroy. “I really hope people welcome Come With Me with open arms and I look forward to show you what we have in store for the future.”

Come With Me is available to stream and purchase this Friday, 23rd June. Tickets go on sale for the Come With Me release tour on Thursday 29th June, here.
