Australia’s post-rock torchbearers sleepmakeswaves reach new levels of euphoria on Made of Breath Only, delivering the sonic embodiment of what climbing Mount Everest would be like.

The band’s fourth album explores the emotional and musical extremes of the at times, suffocating realms of post-rock, inviting the listener to delve into the depths of both vulnerability and triumph.

Made of Breath Only is connected through an ongoing build on atmospheric electronic motifs, where the band use synths that compliment and heighten guitars, rather than overshadow. Each song feels like a dramatic orchestral movement, reaching an ethereal climax towards the middle and slow-burning into an epic finale.

sleepmakeswaves have perfected this formula on Made of Breath Only, ringing most true on 10-minute monolith The Edge of Everything showcasing contrasting mellow acoustic guitars and frantic synth soundscapes before unleashing sonic assault level riffing. On lead single, Tundra, reverb drenched dueling riffs are at the forefront.

To Light And Then Return‘s grungier guitar tones are reminiscent of the band’s 2014 effort, Love Of Cartography, as well as other Aussie experimental luminaries Karnivool. The opening chords of Glacier feature an even sludgier, droning pattern before breaking into soaring leads.

Made of Breath Only is a textured and nuanced addition to their discography, that is sure to translate in feats of epic proportions during their upcoming tour.

Standout Tracks: The Edge of Everything, Midnight Sun, Tundra

Stick this next to: Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, Karnivool
