Though we aren’t inundated with review CDs any more (a what?), our inboxes are crammed …
We’re proud to stream the debut EP from Melbourne alt rock rising stars Harbours – listen to Nothing Stays the Same here!
Their new material hears the band embarking in a darker, more-aggressive direction. It’s a departure from the pop-punk sound on their demo, instead honing grunge, emo, shoegaze and post-rock influences.
The lyrics reflect on a dark period in the life of vocalist Tory Robertson.
“I can’t remember the day I woke up depressed. I can’t remember the first time my anxiety kept me wide eyed at 4am,” Tory says. “My happiness left me suddenly and gradually all at the same time and I don’t think I’ve ever quite recovered. In fact I don’t think anyone ever really does. My depression is still one of the most violently fleeting experiences I’ve ever had. An everlasting vacancy filled my chest for only a few months but it has left a stain on my lungs that I can’t scratch out.
“Coming back to these feelings and attempting to manifest them into words and melodies was extremely difficult. It was a long process in which some things came quite quickly, while others had to be fought for. Although I live with this demon every day, he is fragmented. The disconnect between became more and more apparent as my writing progressed. But I feel as though this writing journey has been important in reflecting on who I am and who we all are before, during and after our darkest days have come to pass – because nothing stays the same.”
Harbours is Tory Robertson (Vocals), Sam Bassal (Guitar), Thomas Elliott (Guitar), Kyle O’Shea (Bass), and Kristian Evagelistis (Drums).
Nothing Stays the Same is available from 5 Feb, through Bandcamp.
