PIERCE THE VEIL INTERVIEW

by Jonty Simmons

It’s been a long time coming for Australian Pierce The Veil fans, but off the back of their new release Misadventures, the band are finally returning to our shores for the first time since 2013. Their fourth album sees the band expand their horizons to incorporate slower melodies and breakneck tempos, yet still retains their signature style and lyricism that have seen them skyrocket in popularity.

Excited to finally headline club shows down under, lead singer Vic Fuentes notes that the band have been holding their cards to their chest in regards to an Australian tour for far too long. “We’ve been planning it all for ages, so it’s kind of a relief to finally let out all the secrets! It’s been so long since we’ve been to Australia, I don’t think we’ve ever been able to put on a proper show out there.” With their last club shows almost a distant memory in 2011, Fuentes points out that the band have never been able to give their dedicated fanbase a true PTV experience until now.

“The only time we did a club tour was with Escape The Fate was years and years ago, and we were supporting them. So that wasn’t really our show, and besides that we’ve only done Soundwave that one time. It’s going to be a great experience for us being able to do our show the way we like doing it.” Stating, “we like club shows because we get to control the whole environment, and we can manipulate the show to suit every little detail”, it seems that fans will be more than satisfied with the still-secret elements of the show the band are planning.

“There are some songs we’ve always wanted to play but have never really given it a try…”

However, even with the opportunity to use “more smoke and mirrors and have a little fun with it” during their own show, the question of the setlist comes up as a major concern for hardcore faithfuls. For the band itself, says the singer, it’s even harder for them to decide on what they’re going to cut out of the set. “It’s getting harder to make a setlist, it’s like ‘fuck, there’s so many we want to play how are we going to do it?!’, so it’s been a new issue we’ve had. It’s cool though, I guess it’s just something we have to do as we keep going as a band.”

Luckily enough for those who are halfway through cardiac arrest at the thought of their favourites being dropped, Fuentes laughs whilst assuring Hysteria that Pierce The Veil aren’t a band to drop their old material. “We’re not that kind of band that feels that way about our old songs. We totally love them and we’ll just keep mixing up our set, and hopefully bring back some songs we’ve never attempted off some old records as well. There are some songs we’ve always wanted to play but have never really given it a try…” His tone switches to a more somber note as he speaks about bands that refuse to play their old material, and even to the extent of trashing it in interviews. “I always hate when bands talk poorly about their old music that people love”, the singer laments, “it’s kind of a bummer when your favourite band doesn’t want to play that song anymore because ‘we’re past it’ or whatever. I still enjoy the songs for the same reasons as when they came out and that moment in my life, it reminds me of that. So I think it’s important to hang onto those things.”
