Everything changed for Apate after their debut, Spit You Out dropped.

The release saw the Brisbane five-piece earning opportunities to tour with high calibre acts like Polaris and Born Of Osiris, as well landing them a signing to Thy Art Is Murder’s Andy Marsh’s record label Human Warfare earlier this year. So, it’s really no surprise that their forthcoming EP, Rage, has been steadily gaining momentum as ‘the release to check out’ before it’s even released.

Contorting between a babel of industrial overtones, electronically produced percussive elements and high-frequency distortion, Rage shows Apate dominating and reinvigorating the kind of frenetic uneasiness that was popularised by ‘shock rock/metal’ groups in the 90’s. By adopting a similar kind of high-pitch antenna sounding distortion to the guitars and drum loops, Under My Skin’s introduction feels like a homage to Slipknot’s (sic). Maintaining the energy and tempo throughout, Zakk Ludwig demonstrates incredible tonal qualities and natural reverb to his voice as it’s backed by Caleb Patch’s cleans.

Rage is not only one of the most refreshing sounds to come out of Australian metal in a while, it’s also an AOTY contender, which is something rarely said about an EP.

Flesh Feeder balances open moments between sounds that can only be described as manic, giving it a whirlwind effect as it bends through soundscapes and genres. Impressively, the song’s breakdown also maintains fast paced guitar throughout; an uncommon and difficult characteristic to include in a breakdown which Apate executes fluently. Bringing in a slower and more emotive style, Gasoline Anthem evokes a visceral response as you hear the resonation in Ludwig’s voice as it flow into subdued but clean backing’s in the bridge. Dancing On The Razor’s Edge kicks in with visceral proportions and memorable rhythm sections which flow so perfectly into the bouncy riff of Shinigami that they could easily be performed as one long song.

It’s not uncommon to see up and comers being hyped, after all everyone loves to jump on a band before they get big. Now is your chance with ApateRage is not only one of the most refreshing sounds to come out of Australian metal in a while, it’s also an AOTY contender, which is something rarely said about an EP. Don’t sleep on this one.
