Vive la révolution!

One verse and one chorus. That’s all it took for World War Me to be awarded full marks for their self-titled debut release. As the steady beat swells in opener The Good Enough, it’s clear that World War Me are the hope, the revival that we’ve been waiting for.

Merging of punk, emo and rock was a big thing back in the noughties and was, unfortunately, pushed to one side as post-hardcore cascaded the scene and essentially, everyone grew up—World War Me, though heavily and obviously influenced by those scene bands of old, are something much, much more.

It’s gritty, it’s punk, and most importantly, it’s memorable.

These anathematic punk-emo riffs and characterful tales of angst and woe from the Chicago quintet make for a great change on the scene, and while you might argue that what World War Me present has all been done before, the counter-argument is this—if it’s getting done well and with a fresh angle, who cares?! The beauty of this band is that this album is going to appeal to those in their late-20s and the wee young whippersnappers we made way for.

World War Me have taken their obvious punk-rock influences and shaken in their own flavour, gritty and light melodies dosed with cheeky and original vocals. Frontman Stephen Krypel boasts that mandatory element required by any successful band of this style; a distinctive voice. It’s gritty, it’s punk, and most importantly, it’s memorable. Put this over the simple guitar lines and rapid drumming of his bandmates and you have the makings of the next big thing in rock.

Call them My Chemical Romance inspired, call them a younger Sum 41, call them what you will, World War Me has this old school scene kid reminiscing and rejoicing in the second coming, the sounds of which will be the soundtrack to her summer!
