VOIID // The Entire Room Was Submissive To The Band’s Every Whim

Walking into Brisbane’s The Foundry at 8pm on a Friday felt like stepping into a time machine, there was more flannel, mullets and tallies than I’d ever seen.

It was a fitting scene for the first support of the night Boing Boing Band, a bunch of boys who looked like they’d just finished working on the farm and got a little too pissed and formed a band. With an akubra and a sweaty set of shirtless bodies, the band played to a fairly empty room, but it didn’t stop them from having a good time.

If Pist Idiots and Violent Soho had a baby out of wedlock that came out of the womb with mullets and dirty moustaches then it would be the three piece band called Crum. They played their latest single Starving Me and drew a decent crowd, the room was starting to feel lukewarm and the crowd was finally leaning into the music when Crum pulled a rabbit out of a hat and played one of the best covers of Israel’s Son from Silverchair’s classic album Frogstomp.

VOIID rose to the stage and kicked off what was a really underwhelming messy first three songs, the room had lost the energy, and the band was struggling to find its feet. Out of nowhere VOIID threw a cover of the Daria theme song You’re Standing On My Neck by Splendora and the apathy, yet energetic band found their groove and pulled it together, by the time the band transitioned into their track Deranged the entire room was submissive to the bands every whim.

The next track kicked off with the bassist Antonia Hickey playing the opening chords of Silly Girl while standing on a crate on stage, and the crowd ate up every minute of that song. With a clear message, and strong influences like The Runaways VOIID are a new pinnacle of punk rock, the only thing lacking in their set was stage presence between tracks. The banter was underwhelming and came off a little cringey, thankfully the crowd was too wasted and the music too good so it didn’t take much away from the overall set.

The next track was the reason why they were in town, the debut of Twin, and if song and crowd reaction was any indication of the band’s future prosperity, we have a lot to look forward to from this Brisbane girl group. Between throwing a mic down her top and gyrating to the drum beat, or lighting lighters on stage, and kicking milk crates, the band brings a refreshing energy to the punk scene that has been missing for a while.

The momentum continued and the set got better and better, each song reached a new height and the overall energy felt like it was continuously building, by the end of the set it felt like the room was going to burst. While the messiness at the start showed the band’s youth and immaturity, it also showed how much room it has to grow. Frontwoman Anji Greenwood’s messy drunk vibes are comparable to Courtney Love, there’s an undeniable charm that comes with it, and by the end I had almost forgotten and forgiven the band for those first few songs. VOIID closed with Not For You and the energy that had been building in the room came to a head, and as the band stepped off stage the bassist apathetically gave her guitar to someone in the front row and let them continue on for them.
