SWIFT GOES PUNK // The Top 5 T-Swift Pop Goes Punk Covers

The long awaited and highly anticipated drop of new music from Taylor Swift has garnered some mixed feelings from long-time fans, and her haters.

Reputation (due to be released Friday, 10th November), signifies Swift’s new found love of all things edgy. Is it a jump on the back of punk culture? Maybe. Will it work for her? Eh. Will this see her embraced by the emos, metalheads, and all wearers of thick eyeliner and writing lyrics on their converse for good? Possibly.

The cowboy-boot-wearing pop princess, according to Taylor herself, cannot come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, cause she’s dead. It seems that “new” Taylor is embracing the negative titles the public has thrown at her and running (or rather, slithering) with them. (GG Allin, who?)

When promoting Reputation, Taylor took to Instagram to post three cryptic videos that when put together, formed a serpent. She’s literally ‘shed’ her clean cut skin and is ready to embrace her new persona.

There is an endless thread of speculation about who the new Taylor will target next to discuss. But instead, we thought we’d take it back to the glory days and count down the top five Punk Goes Pop style T-Swift covers. Let’s go.

5. Look What You Made Me Do, Our Last Night

To be fair, Our Last Night have done some incredible covers in their time (check out their cover of Cold Water by Major Lazer and Justin Bieber) but this one takes out the number five spot purely because it’s “new” Taylor

4. You Belong With Me, For All Those Sleeping, Punk Goes Pop Vol. 4

For All Those Sleeping’s cover of You Belong With Me has some seriously good spots, particularly the breakdown. But the endless switching between hardcore and pop electronica is a little jarring.

3. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, From Lambs to Lions

Lambs to Lions have done a seriously good job with this cover. It has all the Taylor elements that made the original so successful, with the perfect injection of post-hardcore to solidify it as an anthem. My only suggestion? Have Ryan McManus speak the “Ugh, so he calls me up and he’s like ‘I still love you’/And I’m like,I just… I mean this is exhausting you know?/Like we are never getting back together./Like ever’,” part.

2. I Knew You Were Trouble, We Came As Romans, Punk Goes Pop Vol. 6

There’s a screaming goat at the end of this film clip. Enough said.

1. Blank Space, I Prevail, Punk Goes Pop Vol. 6

When you think about Punk Goes Pop Taylor Swift covers, this is the first track you think of. I Prevail has taken the darker emotions behind the lyrics and matched them musically, whereas the original masked them behind something “pretty”. There’s some truth to this cover, and that’s why it takes out the top spot.

P.S. Ms. Swift, if you’re reading this, bring the old Taylor back. We all miss her.
