One of the most exciting things about the local music scene is watching fresh-faced young bands begin to step out with their first pieces of creative content, learning the ropes of the recording process and begin maturing as songwriters and musicians. Listen below:

Melbourne pop-punk upstarts SNDWNR fall into a ‘young and fresh’ category, showing the potential of a young band who are willing to be professional, work hard, and produce road-tested content.

REVIEW – by Alasdair Belling

Kicking off with an anthemic riff and broad half-time groove, Social Haunts has all the rhythmic and dynamic tools of a great, varied song, however is ultimately let down by a poor mix and under-developed song writing.

While the drums sound solid and the bass pleasantly beefy, the addition of the slightly tinny sounding guitars all but drowns out the vocals of frontman Ryan Wilson, whose voice doesn’t quite stand the test of power and enthusiasm.

In addition, sections of the song, part in question being the bridge, fall into the trap of repeating something that works four times over before moving on, missing any chance to add in any new sounds of flavours to help the song grow dynamically.

Despite these drawbacks, Social Haunts has all the (audible) vocal hooks one could ask for from a local band, with the melodies and harmonic lines sounding refreshingly original, avoiding copy-cat syndrome.

There is still a way to go for SNDWNR but experience is the best growth tool in this world, and some time on the road and in the writing room is sure to build on a promising foundation heard here.
