SLEEP // Stoner Metal Icons Release New Single ‘Leagues Beneath’

It was only a month ago Californian doom metal legends Sleep surprised the world with their excellent comeback album The Sciences. Now, the band has released the single Leagues Beneath, a track not featured on their new album.

Leagues Beneath is the latest entry in Adult Swim’s long-running Singles Series. The band released their first piece of recorded material since their first break-up in 2014, The Clarity, through Adult Swim. The American channel known for shows like Rick And Morty and Tim And Eric has a history of releasing great metal tunes throughout their history, having released songs by Deafheaven, Mastodon, Pallbearer, and more.

At nearly 17 minutes, the track is longer than anything on The Sciences, leading to speculation it was just too long to include. Much like Sleep’s best work, Leagues Beneath is long, slow, and heavy, with singer/bassist Al Cisneros growls appearing six minutes in. The track ends with Matt Pike’s riffs fading away, giving way to a surprising conclusion of clean psychedelic strings.

It’s been a strong year for Sleep, with the only disappointment being their cancellation of their Australian tour in January. The cancellation came after Life Is Noise tour promoter David Cutbush was accused of sexual misconduct. The band promised to arrange a new tour in the future. There’s no news on an Australian return, but hopefully it will be soon.
