YOU ME AT SIX // Taking Over The World

YOU ME AT SIX with Hellions & Columbus
Big Top, Sydney
Saturday September 23, 2017

Accomplishing the heights of peak-scene hysteria over five years ago, You Me At Six have transformed from side fringe wielding emos to stadium vanquishing pros. Not many band’s can claim their transition ran as smoothly as the British lads have had it, a massive testament to the gripping universal appeal of their high octane live show.

Kicking off things were Brisbane’s Columbus, who have improved exponentially since the release of excellent collection of bittersweet heartbreak anthems, Spring Forever last year. The sad-boys have slowly mastered the equilibrium between a welcoming modesty in their playing style with the over-the-top emo lyricism, proving perfect fodder to get the finger-pointing crowd going.

Tearing through stellar tracks off the faultless Opera Oblivia, showcasing their prowess as an equally experimental, undeniably catchy and moshworthy live act to be reckoned with, it was quite clear Hellions could’ve headlined the entire show. If this is any indication of what their Unify Gathering set will entail, prepare for scene history to be made.

Entering the stage in a plume of smoke, Josh Franceschi is the type of rockstar under appreciated in 2017. Crooning the opening lines of Spell It Out with a gritty swagger, the tone for an evening of, in his words, ‘pure rock n roll’ was set.

Bite My Tongue, a sign of their Warped Tour past, didn’t come off as a ploy for nostalgia but has matured with the band’s monolithic transformation into festival headliners. The crowd dutifully filling in for Oli Syke’s scene defining guest scream verse and exploded with screams during Fresh Start Fever.

Night People certified the band’s position as modern rock peers of Royal Blood and the Killers—it’s monster sound was clearly oversized for the restrictive walls of Big Top, with both guitarists shredding with the cockiness of 70s megastars that have been trained amongst post hardcore faithfuls and pop punk stawlwarts.

The band were clearly pulling every trick in the book—Franceschi hijacking a photographer’s gear to take selfies, crowd jumps on cue and the throwing of leather jackets, and god damn, it worked. Although Take Off Your Colours celebrated it’s milestone 10th birthday this year, no signs of it were presented in the set—You Me At Six are living in the present and loving it. They’ve have managed to arise from an era of pop punk that hasn’t been forgiving to most, unscathed and ready to continue to vanquish the heights of rock greatness.
