RETURN TO ROOTS // Primeval Metal Thunder

Return To Roots + Skindred
Eatons Hill Tavern, Brisbane
22 September, 2017

The growing crowd at Eatons Hill Tavern is a testament to the fact that, no matter what happens in his musical career, Max Cavalera still has legions of fans wherever he goes.

Tonight they have turned out in droves to the first Australian show of the Return To Roots tour that Max and brother Iggor Cavalera have been taking around the world.

Welsh nu-metal band Skindred joined the tour with the Cavalera brothers and they kick off proceedings tonight. I’m not sure if nu-metal is the only way to describe these guys as they combine punk, ska, a bit of rap, some drum and bass and dubstep all into one big mess of music. But hey, it works.

Frontman Benji Webbe is full of charisma. He definitely has a way with the crowd and, in no uncertain terms, yells at the pit to get moving, even stopping songs on occasion when the punters aren’t moshing to his satisfaction. It’s all part of the show and the crowd eats it up. He is a true entertainer. A real Brazilian carnival atmosphere hangs in the air as they make their way through their set.

Tracks like Doom Riff and Pressure are taken from their older catalogue and go over well with the crowd, but the new tracks like Sound The Siren also get a look in and are well received.

In what might have been a daunting task, kicking off a tour where the crowd is hard to win over, Skindred got the party started tonight. The mood is electric as they depart the stage and the final minutes countdown to Max and Iggor.

There are only the two bands on tonight, but this doesn’t mean the wait for the brothers to hit the stage is any less agonising. Finally, the house lights dim and the cheers echo around the Eatons Hill ballroom as Iggor settles behind the skins, and then Max, flanked by Marc Rizzo on guitar and Tony Campos on bass, takes the stage.

From the first roar of ‘Roots, Bloody Roots!’ the energy in the room multiplies and the crowd goes absolutely berserk. Screaming along to the track, the pit is a frenzy of flying bodies and the band feed off this as they roar into Attitude and Cut-Throat.

The whole band are on point tonight. Rizzo with his sharp solos and Campos ripping it up on the bass, all the while having an amazing time, are a sight to behold and overall, apart from a few minor feedback squeals, the sound is spot on.

And to watch Max and Iggor perform these songs in this sort of setting, is truly an incredible experience. The passion and the love that they have for this album and that era of Sepultura is plain to see as they perform with huge grins on their faces and they really aim to recreate the album as best as they can from the record to the stage, including all the intros and indigenous instruments that were used.

Obviously, when you are seeing a band play an album from start to finish, it’s easy to know what the next track is. Even so, there were a few little surprises, just to mix it up a little. I won’t tell you what these are, lest they be different for each city. Even so, if you haven’t grabbed a ticket to the remaining shows, you should and soon, before they sell out. Seeing Roots in its entirety in a live setting is definitely an experience you don’t want to miss.
