It was a fairly packed room, even at 8:40pm. I was so anxious from driving laps and laps trying to find a park, but all that disappeared once I entered the band room and heavy sounds hit my ears. I hadn’t listened to their music before but I really dug it. Their set was strong. I chucked them a follow once they finished playing.

In between sets is always a little awkward when you’re at a show by yourself, so I kinda just looked through my phone. Sliding side to side, every time someone needed to squeeze past. Deadlights came onto the stage. Phew. I could stop scrolling. Their work is incredible.

Belle Haven were third to warm up the stage. The room was nearly full. Vocalist David, spoke about mental health. He said that about eight years ago he tried to kill himself and ended up in a mental hospital, after that he and his brother Chris, started Belle Haven. Pretty heavy. It connected with a lot of people in the room.

Talking about mental health at a show is something becoming quite common. You can just see the sadness in eyes across the room, feeling the words. It’s a good thing. It’s a good thing talking about it, That, and we can all come and jump around (or awkwardly stand) and get lost in music for a few hours.

I found my friends before Polaris’ set. Thank God! With curtains closed, we waited for the headliners to hit the stage.

I heard the dude behind me saying “I’m loving it. I’m fucking loving it”. Sounds as cheesy as, but it was kinda spot on. It sounded like he was having a little jizz with every breakdown.

I first heard Polaris at UNIFY in January earlier this year. The Sydney metalcore group hit the stage early in the afternoon, playing to a drenched crowd jumping around in the rain. Now they’re playing a headline show to a sold-out crowd. I actually only discovered all the bands from this tour, this year.

The curtains opened, Jamie’s hair was luscious and the intensity coming from the stage smashed you in the face. Fists were in the air, people jumping on shoulders, heads bopping. Everyone was moving in some way. I haven’t seen people move around so much at a hardcore show in ages.

we came as romans

I could feel the hairs on my arms sticking up, little bumps growing. I couldn’t stop grinning and looking at the girls with me. Looking around, everyone was having such a grouse time.

There were circle pits and death walls, and part of me wish I got involved. I hung back and watched everyone lose their shit. One guy ran in with his phone up in his hand. I don’t know how it ended up, presuming a smashed screen.

Polaris gave us a preview of a couple of tracks from their upcoming album; The Mortal Coil. They did not disappoint. The riffs are heavy and the vocals are crisp. Their album drops super soon and I reckon heaps of people will be stoked on it.

Overall, it was such a sick time. There were moments of lonely awkwardness between the first sets, but each time the music started, all that shit fell away.

That’s one of the raddest things about seeing live music; no matter how shit the day is, when you see a band hit the stage, it can make you feel surprisingly happy. Even if it’s just for a little while. I feel the heavier the music, the better I feel.

Goosebumps, sweat and no black eyes. I’m pretty stoked with that. Polaris were fucking sick…I have a feeling they’ll be the most played artist for all of us next week.

That’s all, folks // Photo: Ben Gunzburg
