Familiar progressive rock formula

Nothing More have released their latest 18 track mammoth of an album The Stories We Tell Ourselves, adding a healthy collection of modern-rock stadium anthems to their catalogue.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves gets right into it with hard-hitting rock straight off the bat with Do You Really Want It, which gives a taste of the familiar rock formula that is a consistent theme throughout the album. Let ‘em Burn gains more attention with a unique mismatch of a fast-paced groovy verse and bridge, changing the rhythm before sticking back to the accustomed chorus.

Ripping Me Apart combines the heavy guitars with a selection of electronic instrumentation adding an assortment of industrial synth and effects. Funny Little Creatures keeps the consistent heavy sound while bringing in one of the catchiest choruses of the album and mixing with a short breakdown to give a more memorable standout.

The album kicks it down a notch with a mellow sound, taking on the form of the epic ballad Just Say When arguably the highlight of the album. With a lone acoustic guitar, accompanied by poignant yet heart-warming strings, Johnny Hawkins gives a classic rock vocal performance as the song builds to accompany his rising passion, ending with a massive stadium worthy crescendo chorus.

The constant impression left throughout the album is vocalist Johnny Hawkin’s range as he hits the highest notes to crisp perfection and then goes straight into unclean growls. Combining this with a variety of vocal effects, Hawkins seems to bring something new and fresh in nearly every song.

Just Say When’s familiar winning sound is once again highlighted in album closer FadeInFadeOut, combining a slower rock tempo with Hawkin’s clean vocals. Fusing all the distinctive elements used throughout the album, such as strings, electronic animations, and trademark distortion, FadeInFadeOut progressively builds to form an unrepeatable climax.

Although parts of The Stories We Tell Ourselves are nothing new with a familiar progressive rock formula, it’s hard not to find yourself chanting along.. The album truly shines with the more experimental songs like Let ‘em Burn and Funny Little Creatures, while the biggest highlights Just Say When and FadeInFadeOut are a perfect representation of Nothing More’s cross-genre talents.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves is an explosive amalgamation of peculiar and familiar sounds, creating something fresh and intriguing all the way through.
