Lest we forget

Does the world need another kitschy punk rock covers record? The answer to this is, unequivocally, no. There’s already enough shit on YouTube for 13-year-olds who are discovering music to search for.

Despite all the covers, Rarities Vol. 1 – The Covers never really feels like a covers record, more a chance to celebrate the life, music and genius of No Use for a Name frontman Tony Sly. Five years after his passing, Rarities succeeds at capturing the irrepressible spirit of Sly—even if the song selections seem rote. Hybrid Moments is such a good song, anyone who touches it comes out a winner—even low-key shit versions by the likes of Nathan Williams or Nick Oliveri are made great by Danzig’s not-to-be-fucked-with melody. Tone and the lads, to their credit, really lean into that melody to craft one of the more rousing iterations of the Static Age cut.

[ Rarities Vol. 1 ] Serves as an important reminder of the charisma Tony Sly added to every song he touched.

The same holds true everywhere on this posthumous album. It could have easily been a boring cash grab, in an internet age we probably don’t need another punk cover of Turning Japanese, but instead serves as an important reminder of the charisma Tony Sly added to every song he touched.
Now that a five years worth of kids have had the chance to fall in love with No Use, but never had the chance to witness how captivating Sly could be up on stage in a hot, shitty club, Rarities – Vol. 1 shines a light on him as one of punk’s fallen heroes. Lest we forget.
