There may be happiness in slavery, but there’s very little in Nine Inch Nails’ frontman Trent Reznor’s neighbourhood.

As reported by TMZ, Reznor has filed a restraining order against an erratic neighbour who has been harassing and threatening him, his family and friends over the past six months.

Court documents detail a number of incidents between the parties.

On Christmas Eve, Reznor and his kids were playing outside when the neighbour, appearing “dishevelled” in an open shirt, shorts, and Santa hat, walking up and down the sidewalk ranting, “Rich people can do anything they want, but the Lord will get them in the end.”

A more recent incident involved a visiting friend of Reznor’s being confronted by the neighbour, who proceeded to express his hatred of Reznor and yell that, “Satan is coming for him.”

Reznor and his band were often accused of Satanism and being a harmful influence on the youth during the ’90s by concerned parents. Reznor defended himself during this time in a June 1990 issue of Thrasher magazine: “I didn’t want to come across as an industrial, snarling, Satan-singing entity. That’s not what Nine Inch Nails is.”

An infamous story involved the band being investigated by the FBI for their debut music video Down In It. During shooting, the band acquired a shot by attaching the camera to a balloon, hoping to reverse it for the finished product to imply a POV shot of Reznor falling from a great height. Strong winds blew the camera away, leading it land in a cornfield where a farmer found it. He was deeply concerned by the footage, believing it to be a “gang killing or satanic ritual”, and reported it to the FBI.

A judge granted Reznor’s request for a restraining order, keeping the neighbour ten yards away from him, his family and employees working at his residence.

A court hearing on the matter is set for next month.
