A beast mode record

Having shed the skin of their former selves, Shadows Inside was touted as being the ultimate return to form for Miss May I, bringing forth the beast undisturbed since their debut album, 2009’s Apologies Are For The Weak, or its follow up Monument. In amongst a whirlpool of speed-riffage and double-kick on the album’s opening title track, it’s clear the beast has once again reared its head.

For their sixth full length, Miss May I show a remarkable level of restraint, driving their penchant for relentless chaos in increments rather than droves. As a result, from the huge chorus that ruptures the first minute of Under Fire, the remainder of Shadows Inside is completely unpredictable.

Miss May I show a remarkable level of restraint, driving their penchant for relentless chaos in increments rather than droves.

The record offers the listener few moments of reprieve, the most notable being the opening moments of My Destruction, filled with acoustic guitar. From there, the band pulls you through dizzying heights of stadiumcore to a more sombre, ambient energy of Crawl.

Late entry Lost In The Grey marks a suspenseful climax to the album. Huge Bon Jovi-esque riffs carries through to closer My Sorrow, a track unleashing their whole set of attacks (plus a guitar solo) before strutting gracefully back into their cave. The beast of Miss May I has its territory well protected.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Under Fire, Casualties, My Sorrow
