KICK OUT THE JAMS: WAAX // Sounds We Love, Songs We Dig

WAAX recently dropped their electrifying new single Labrador, so the Hysteria elves just had to know how such a punching punk song comes about.

We asked the Brisbane five piece all about the hardcore songs that make them twitch, the punk tunes that make them groove, and the sounds near and far that help WAAX be WAAX.

THE CUTAWAYS

One of our favourite bands from Brisbane—Emmy Hoare’s voice is bloody brilliant and seeing them live is pretty transcendent. The riffs are juicy as fuck and the songs are primo.

SHOW ME THE BODY

Show Me The Body hail from NYC and listening to them you can definitely hear the influence the city has on their sound. More than just a hardcore punk band SMTB have intertwined hip-hop and electronic elements so sonically their records are a treat. And just when you thought that was enough, frontman Julian Cashwan Pratt prefers banjo over a guitar. Très bien.

HORACE BONES

A Melbourne staple. Cannot stress enough the power of these blokes. They’re intense, dark and punk as hell. Oisin Kelly is one of, if not the best, frontman I think we’ve ever seen. For fans of The Drones and The Birthday Party—it’s totally untamed but super emotional to witness. They just put out a new single! So we’ve put that one here. Please go watch their shows, for fuck sakes, PLEASE!

VOIID

This all female Gold Coast band is KILLING it right now. Their sounds is reminiscent of 90s punk bands like L7, Babes in Toyland and Bikini Kill. Their latest track Silly Girl has all.

HEXDEBT

[We] saw these guys supporting Cable Ties a few weeks back. They have great stage presence and joke around with the audience in between their short, sharp thrashy punk songs. Special mention to guitarist Aife who is a shred lord. Check out Bitch Rising.

TOTTY

Named after dogs, great songs, excellent live. Totty are one of our fav bands going around, you’ve got to see them live because they are so much fun to watch. They just put out a new track Uncomfortable.

EXIT ORDER

A badass band from Boston who only recently put out a new album called Seed of Hysteria, and it’s a fucking pearler. They’re a punk powerhouse, led by absolute queen Anna Cataldo. Here is a ruckus as fuck live video!
