HOUSE VS HURRICANE // Back At It Again With ‘Filth’

House vs Hurricane

At the height of their career, House vs. Hurricane shocked fans by calling it quits. But as sudden as their departure was, so is their return with new album Filth.

Back in 2012, House vs. Hurricane released arguably their most successful album Crooked Teeth. Then, within 12 months of the release, the band shocked fans by announcing their split.

After a final tour with I Killed The Prom Queen and Buried In Verona, as well as River Festival in Far North Queensland, HvH were done.

Or so we thought.

An unexpected Facebook post in 2016 confirmed House vs. Hurricane for UNIFY Gathering 2017.

Chaos ensued. Were HvH back together? Would they be touring again? So many questions and so few answers made us sit down with OG member Chris Shaw to find out what’s what.

“The album has been written for the last two years,” Chris says. “I’d written one or two demo songs [before the breakup] and then the band split up so it went on hold for 6-12 months before I finished it. Then when I tried looking for another band or singer to work with, it didn’t really eventuate. I looked at over 30 people and eventually just turned around and called Dan and Ryan one day and they were stoked to do another record. That was around the same time the offer for UNIFY came through, so it all had that ‘right place and right time’ vibe.”

Chris goes on: “It was definitely always a HvH album, Dan and Ryan just know how to pick apart the songs I write. With the three of us it just works.”

So what does this mean for House vs. Hurricane? Is the band back together, or are they just releasing the album they never got to before they parted ways?

“It’s a bit of column A and a bit of column B. We’re not back together as an active band, we just want to release music when we want to, play shows when we’re all available but not have that pressure to do tours. Everyone except me is married and three of those four have kids, so it’s never going to be what it was like. We don’t have any long term plans, we’re just taking it as it goes!”

Nearly four years have passed from when the boys announced their split, to their reunion shows earlier this year. In Chris’ opinion, the break was essential for them to release new music together.

“When you’re in a band and you’re touring that much, it’s like having four girlfriends… that are all smelly dudes. Tensions run high at times and I think having a couple of years off definitely helped. We were all already pretty burnt out from touring so much after Crooked Teeth, and we lost some of our motivation to make music. So having time to ‘miss it’ then coming back together to play music again has been a much more rewarding and positive experience. Everyone seems closer and happier, and there’s no stress or tension anymore.”

After smashing it at UNIFY in January, we were hoping for confirmation of another tour to celebrate the new album. But sadly, reality and those pesky adult duties might prevent that from happening.

“I think ‘tour’ is the wrong word to use. We definitely won’t be on the road for longer than two nights at a time because people have kids. But there’s every possibility we’ll play shows for it. It’s not gonna be grouped together over two weeks; might be one weekend we play Brisbane and then the next, Melbourne. It’s going to be pretty scattered because everyone’s schedules are so crazy and we all live across three states now. But I personally would love to play shows with this album!”

House vs. Hurricane are tentatively back and ready to blow minds with their new album Filth, out June 2nd through UNFD. Pre-orders are available via 24Hundred.net.
