THE HORRORS // Go Genre-Hopping On New LP ‘V’

Who doesn’t like a good mix of trance, rock, glitch and funk? London based experimental rock group The Horrors are set to cram all these styles into their bold new album V, which is due to drop on 22 September.

Flying between 80s pop and crushing alternative rock, the band admit that the diversity of the sound is a “risk.”

“But life isn’t much fun without risk” says frontman Faris BadwanIt’s the antithesis of being creative if you know what you’re going to be doing every time.”

Keyboardist Tom Furse expands on not staying still, noting how “David Bowie pre-empted the modern condition of not being able to stay in one place for very long, and I get frustrated with bands who stay still. Because then it does become a career.”

The band recorded the record in London with Paul Epworth, credited on works by similarly experimental artists FKA Twigs, Lorde and Arcade Fire.

“When we started, we had a very clear idea of what we wanted to do, which was to create…a fast, violent racket” says bassist Rhys Webb.

“But even though we started with this punky, garage sound, there was always this real spirit of wanting to experiment and explore.”

The band shared a teaser for the record with fans last month in the form of the visually stunning video for lead single Machine.

While the song itself is a relentless march of synths, pounding drums and grainy guitars, the video is an ode to the wonders of computer technology, featuring layers of micro-organisms grotesquely writhing and forming deformed shapes.

It perfectly captures the unease and anxiety of the song itself, as well as complementing the modern sounds heard on the song. Check it out below.
