For the uninitiated, Wintersun are a band that take their listeners on epic journeys with intricate songs that transport you to another time and place. The Forest Seasons is no different to this and while it’s only a four track album, each song spans twelve or more minutes and tells the tale of a forest awakening and moving through the seasons. If you think you might have heard this somewhere before, then you are correct as Wintersun cite Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons as the inspiration for this record and while it’s not the sequel to Time that fans have been waiting for, this album is a nice surprise in the interim.

The band have really done well in composing this album.

The band have really done well in composing this album. The tracks all mimic their names, being slightly lighter and more upbeat throughout Spring and Summer, to grim and moody in Autumn and then dark and sombering as you enter Winter and each track moves through heavy, distorted riffs, beautiful orchestral pieces and guttural metal grows mixed with clean vocal melodies. One of the best things about Wintersun, and also the genius of vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist Jari Mäenpää, is that you are headbanging one minute and then transfixed the next as throughout the album it isn’t left to the lyrics to tell the whole story, the music plays its part in completing the tale as well.

If you enjoy listening to symphonic metal that will take you away with an epic story, then take the journey into the forest and experience all the seasons that Wintersun bring to life in their latest record.
