On first listen to Father Sky from Sydney doom band Hypergiant you’d be forgiven for thinking that this is a band that has been honing their skills for many years, across a plethora of albums. In fact, this is the debut LP from the band, and as far as debuts go, it’s ticking all the right boxes.

The quality of doom, stoner and sludge music on display here is solid. There are plenty of heavy riffs and bass lines, killer drum fills and Nathan Lee’s vocals range from cleans to gravelly low screams with ease.

Father Sky kicks off with Perseus Arm, a fuzzy number that incorporates some satellite noise and feedback, and straight away the tone of the album is set. Being a doom album, you’re probably anticipating that there are going to be tracks that are on the lengthy side, and there certainly are a couple ranging into the seven minute mark, but Hypergiant are so well versed in their genre that these tracks don’t sound like they drag on. In fact, the second longest track, Island 3, is possibly one of the best on the album with its catchy melodies.

This album is definitely one to pick up if you’re a fan of doom done well as this is certainly what you get with Hypergiant.
