Raw mix full of furious riffs

For a band that has won a Spellemannspris (Norwegian Grammy), toured with Cannibal Corpse and played some of more elite European festivals, it’s hard to understand why Execration aren’t on more people’s radars, especially after the 2014 release of Morbid Dimensions. Maybe it is the idea that death metal belongs to their neighbours in Sweden, and that Norwegian metal bands are committing sacrilege if they aren’t playing black metal, the music that is Norway’s biggest cultural export, or maybe they just enjoy being as underground as they possibly can. Whatever the reason though, Execration are sure to be gaining a lot more attention after the release of Return To The Void.

You can hear how Execration has progressed musically on this release, which will be their fourth full length, mastering their craft and their instruments and combining elements of old school thrash, extreme metal, death metal and various takes on the black metal sounds. It’s a raw, eclectic mix full of furious riffs and intense vocals, but it works.

Norwegian band Execration have heeded the call of their country’s black metal forefathers on Return To The Void and have ventured away from their death metal roots and released a more extreme, black metal album.

The record itself barely clears forty minutes, with some longer tracks giving a nod to the more traditional black metal influences, but there are also some shorter, punchier tracks mixed in for good measure. One thing that really stood out were the prominent bass lines in the tracks Nekrocosm and Cephalic Transmissions, which really showed off the more avant garde and experimental side of their black metal influences.

Overall, Return To The Void, shows a band that has written a solid release, but also a band that is still playing with their influences as they move forward, finding their way and developing their own sound. Keep an eye on them as they promise to be a band that will come out with some very interesting music in the future.
