Breakdowns to Beatdowns

Another day, another deathcore release. One is not like the others though, and Daybreak’s new EP Death Dreams is that lone wolf. It’s hard to find a local record without a feature from Australian deathcore gods CJ McMahon or in this case, Aversions Crown’s Mark Poida these days. But when they make it sound so good in Lost Sentience, does following the trend even matter? The Possessor is positively filthy in its breakdown onslaught at its close. There’s more than a little I Exalt flavour in the title track and there are no complaints on that front. The rise of clean vocals (Ala Alpha Wolf’s Mono) will set some people’s teeth on edge but fuck ‘em, they’re not out of place and fit in well. Don’t even bother with the YouTube copy of Loose Ends; it doesn’t do the song’s atmosphere justice. Drop some dollars on a Spotify premium account or buy it on iTunes to hear the depths this record hits. Do it just for the feature of Polaris’ Jamie Hails on Repulse. We never knew we wanted this, but boy are we glad it happened. Breakdowns ain’t nothing without meat and Daybreak have carved up a slice of depravity on Death Dreams.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Repulse, Lost Sentience, The Possessor
