HALLOWEEN HYSTERIA // A Statement on Whoretopsy’s Departure

We won’t lie to you: it’s been a very difficult week. Try as we might to satisfy all parties, the compromise had to be made. We’ve decided to continue the Halloween Hysteria without Melbourne death metal band Whoretopsy. This is not a decision we arrived at lightly.

To begin, we at Hysteria want to make it clear, first and foremost, that we do not condone any form of violence against women. We also believe in the right to freedom of expression, and discussion between both sides of a disagreement. All art provokes—some art more than others.

Art is subjective, and art inevitably sparks discussion. Platforms such as horror and satire are integral to Whoretopsy’s lyrics and success. We wholeheartedly believe that it has never been, and never will be, Whoretopsy’s intention to advocate for violence against anyone.

However, this is a sensitive issue. It heard several valued voices putting forth their views. In the interest of all those who have purchased tickets, as well as providing an opportunity for multiple other young acts to continue their success, Whoretopsy will no longer be playing our Festival.

We are thankful that they have been understanding throughout the past week and wish them success with their upcoming headline tour. It is disappointing that this has happened after our initial announcement, and we understand that this may be frustrating. We also understand that this may seem like a “bowing to PC culture” that has become a buzzworthy and thrown about phrase.

It is a volatile climate we live in, and sometimes volatile actions are called for. As we value freedom of expression, we also value the freedom for others to protest. We know this will be unsatisfactory to some, and that’s your right. If our actions don’t suit your views, we are offering full refunds to any patrons who were heading to see Whoretopsy at the Festival. We hope that you still want to come check out the many other amazing acts that we have playing, and will be a part of a brand new chapter in the Brisbane festival circuit.

Going forward, we will still be providing everything else that we have promised. Rather than letting this take away from all the hard work we and so many others have put in, we are still dedicated to making Halloween Hysteria a great time for all. We’ve already had confirmation that some fans are flying interstate which blows our minds. We’re sure bands like The Bennies, King Parrot, Void Of Vision, Alpha Wolf, Drown This City and all the other bands flying in would love to have a dedicated fanbase show up to make sure us Southerners can hear you all the way up in Brisbane.

If you have any questions (within reason), we’ll try and respond to them on social media. Thank you so much for your continued support, and we’ll see you in the spooky pit this October!
