For a debut release, Fight the Sun, have been able to unleash a stadiumesque brand of rock, a sound many polished bands often struggle to achieve albums into their careers, yet this Melbourne three-piece have managed straight off the bat. Check out our interview below with vocalist and guitarist Adrian, to find out how the band went about achieving their sound and what lies ahead for Fight the Sun.

Hysteria: How did you find the whole process, the writing, the recording, the mixing, all of it? Is it everything that you were expecting it to be or was it a completely different beast for this one?

Adrian: Look, it was a little bit of both to be honest with you. I mean, having played in a few different bands before and done probably a fair amount of recording and things like that at the time, in some ways it was actually probably the easiest experience. But in some ways was actually really difficult. So what I mean by that, it’s like we sat down and Tom, who produced it, pretty much made us write … Well, didn’t make us, but suggested we write about 25-odd songs, So, the task was basically to sit down and write 25 songs, [sic] and be fairly kind of ruthless about it as well. To basically get four to five songs.

But you get some weird looks sometimes when you’re wandering down the street and you’ve got your phone up to mouth and you’re humming into it as you’re walking down the street.

So thematically, and I guess in terms of songwriting as well, what were you looking for in this EP?

From a thematic point of view, I really wasn’t thinking that to begin with. And it’s really just finding good songs. You know what I mean? Just really good songs. But when I look back at it, I kind of stood back after we’d done and I looked through the songs and just try to … People actually started asking mequestions, “What’s this song about? What’s that song about?” And all those sort of things, and I’m just like, “In a weird way they’re kind of like … And this is going to sound really strange probably. Like relationship songs.” When I mean relationship, I don’t mean like just sort of personal relationship necessarily or like … All sorts of relationships, you know? And I’m like, “Just for people, relationships within the world, relationships between just strangers.” You know what I mean?

I know that’s a bit much, a really weird way of explaining it, but yeah. And some of the lyrics are sort of like third person observations of other people I know and things like that, and things I’ve been through.

We know it’s only day one, but in my experience, artists never like to sit still for too long. So, are you already kind of throwing some ideas around for that?

Oh, for sure, yeah…Yeah, but it’s just like there’s always something in your head. There’s always little snippets of music, you know what I mean? And sometimes I’m walking around, walking down the street or something like that with my phone and I’m like … And my phone’s just constantly full of just little … sometimes little snippets, sometimes almost entire songs and structures will come out in one go. But you get some weird looks sometimes when you’re wandering down the street and you’ve got your phone up to mouth and you’re humming into it as you’re walking down the street. People just kind of give you a second look like you’re a bit nuts. But yeah

That’s the songwriter’s curse.

[G]oing back to what you’re saying, yeah, and definitely it’s weird. Like a lot of bands, your kind of one step ahead of where everyone sees you. And what I mean by that is, yeah, what’s out at the moment, that was done several months ago. So, we’ve already sort of … I wouldn’t say moved on from it, but yeah, we’ve got a million and one ideas we’re working on at the moment. We’re trying to get back I think to record these again probably by May, June this year, but have it out a little bit quicker than we did for this one.

So, the next one will be even quicker?

I would hope so, definitely hope so. But yeah, yeah, I think probably since this one, we’ve, I don’t know, probably got another 15, 20 completed things. So, it’s once again just a matter of choosing through them.
