THROUGH DREAMS & DISTANCE // PREMIERE—Debut Track ‘Resonate’

Hysteria is proud to present Resonate, the debut single by Through Dreams & Distance, the new post-hardcore project by bassist and vocalist Rob Davies of Feed Her to the Sharks. Listen below:

The track is taken from his EP Disclosure, set for release this Friday, 21st of June. We caught up with Rob on Hysteria Radio’s You’ve Got Mike show – catch it here at 5:30pm today.

Mike: How did this project start?

Rob: I’m working by myself at the moment, so it’s a bit of a solo project. These are pretty much songs that I’ve been writing over the past maybe two years or so. Because I’ve been playing in the band Feed Her to the Sharks and touring pretty heavily with those guys. These are songs, which I just wrote for myself as a guilty pleasure. I’ve just been sitting on them and figured now is a good time to maybe make something of it.

It feels like there’s a new wave of these projects coming forward where they’re named like bands but they’re actually these solo singer-songwriter efforts. I think Chasing Ghosts is another example of that, where it’s not actually a band of dudes, it’s Jimmy Kyle and he champions the whole thing, which is similar to what you’re doing. How are you finding that process? As you mentioned, you had experience with other bands. What’s it like doing this all on your own now?

It’s kind of freeing, really. Writing with the guys is awesome. We all have different backgrounds and influences and we just create this sound together. But I guess, it’s selfish, writing, for me. If I want to write something like this, I can do it. This is just how it’s worked out for me. This is the sound I’ve grown up listening to.

How did you get to this sound? It’s this mix of current day metalcore with a little bit of a tip to the hat to some of the post-hardcore sensibilities of around about the 2005 era. Am I on to something with that? Did I just completely pull that out of the air?

No, that’s definitely it. Past bands I’ve written and played in have been from post hardcore genre. Playing with Sharks it’s been almost just straight up metalcore. I mean this has been a little bit of a step back to the post-hardcore. I’m big on the melodic parts and the big clean song choruses and stuff.

Tell me about the themes and everything that’s going into it. We’ll start with Resonate. Tell me what’s going into this track. I can feel aggression. I can feel a bit of anger. What’s going on in this track?

This was probably the last song I wrote lyrically. It’s all about finding home, but not so much like a physical sense, more of an emotional and a mental home. Do you know what I mean?

I guess it came around a breakup. I talk about when you’re with someone it feels as if maybe you can’t do things alone and you’re always waiting for that person, or waiting for that thing to come and complete you. It’s all about finding home possibly within yourself and that you can do it yourself, by yourself.

How does that represent the greater message of the full EP?

It is a lot of personal issues, I think. Relationships with people, past bands, past band members, as well. Like I was saying before, it was a guilty pleasure, writing. It’s selfish because it’s all very honest and very close to home for myself.

That thing about being a songwriter is you guys have to experience and go through these really horrible and hard things to inspire the music, and then you write the music and then you release it. And then it isn’t yours anymore. It’s now owned by your fans and they take their own message away from it. I mean, does that excite you? Does that frustrate you? How do you feel about that?

No, that definitely excites me. If someone else can take something from this and find some value or some meaning. I think it’s all about finding a meaning in things, and if someone can find that in something I’ve produced, I mean, that’s awesome.
