Brisbane’s pop-punk upstarts Two Times Shy are soaring lofty heights as they let loose their …
Let’s not beat around the bush here, we freaking love how the current BIGSOUND 2017 line-up looks, and things are set to get a whole lot better!
Not content with hosting the likes of Introvert, Endless Heights and Polaris (as far as the heavier music goes), the festival has today dropped a second line-up with a whole heap of goods for fans of slightly heavier sounds to appreciate. Rather than take you through the entire thing, we’ve compiled a highlight reel of our top five picks from lineup announcement #2 to check out at the conference.
1 // Sleepmakeswaves
The past year for these Sydney instrumental boys has seen them kick goal after goal for things that Australian in their genre could hardly dare to dream of five years ago. Since dropping one of the best records of the year in the form of the Arctic-themed Made Of Breath Only, the band has completed national runs supporting Underoath and The Devin Townsend Project, as well as a headlining tour and coveted slot of triple j’s Like A Version. Yep, a post rock act of LAV. Unheard of. These lads are in the form of their lives and are not to be missed.
2 // Dear Seattle
“Fuck being sad! I’m so over it. Fuck having my head three feet in the sand!”
Is there a better chorus to come out of the Alternative scene this year in Australia? The answer is an emphatic no, but thankfully Dear Seattle are more than just a killer hook. The group has been fusing indie rock and punk for the better part of three years now, but have well and truly hit their stride with their huge sounding self titled EP. With an upcoming tour supporting Kingswood, we can assure you that with time on the road the boys will be firing on all levels come BIGSOUND.
3 // Deadlights
Little was known about these Brisbane boys when they were picked up by Greyscale Records at the beginning of the year, but their stunning debut LP Mesma has brought them some well deserved credibility. A refreshing new take on the well flogged metalcore sound that bands have been kicking since ‘09, Deadlights make breakdowns interesting again with creative rhythms, a lack of constant D-chugs and stunning cleans. One to watch.
4 // Belle Haven
With the dominance of Ocean Grove and Polaris, it’s easy to forget just how good this band is. With a sound guaranteed to satisfy fans of the likes of the aforementioned Underoath, Saviour and Dream On Dreamer, Belle Haven are well and truly leading the way for more contemporary metalcore in a world that is sick of the breakdown, clean-chorus formulae. You, Me & Everything In Between is one of the most important Australian releases for the year for its originality. Seeing them in such an intimate setting will surely not last for much longer.
5 // WAAX
Loud, rowdy and in your face, if metal isn’t your thing but you still want something that bites, WAAX have you covered. The band has spent most of this year touring the shit out of the country, keeping the DIY ethos of punk alive, as well as winning over legions of new fans. Having being added to heavy rotation on the J’s, as well as scoring supports alongside the likes of Fall Out Boy, the hype doesn’t exist for nothing.
BIGSOUND will run from September 5-8 in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Details and full lineup below. Click here for tickets.
