THE BEAUTIFUL MONUMENT // PREMIERE—Slither Into Your Eyes With ‘Sins’

this beautiful monument

Hysteria is proud to premiere the new video by Melbourne’s home-brewed rock force The Beautiful Monument, entitled Sins. Watch below:

Sins is the final track from album I’m The Sin released in February this year. The video was directed, filmed and edited by Kieran Ellis-Jones of Crystal Arrow Films.

According to a statement, “the video follows the story of the one you love most turning out to be the one causing the most damage to you. The video depicts Lizi (singer) falling back into the same pattern of torture through different times. You see the doctor giving Lizi life but later attacking her behind a mask/façade before his true identity is revealed as … the one who had previously stitched her together.”

Since the release of I’m The Sin, The Beautiful Monument have supported acts such as I Prevail (USA), Architects (UK) and Slaves (USA). The band will also head out on a national tour with Tonight Alive in early November.

UPDATE 13/7: Sins has been picked up by new music promotion YouTube channel Dreambound. Click here for more.

We caught up with guitarist Andy to throw a bit of light on the ‘Monument.

Tell us about The Beautiful Monument, for those who have not heard of you?

If we’re starting right from the beginning I’d tell you to get comfortable. But fast forward 2 years since we began in 2013 and many, many member changes later, we finally found something that worked in 2015. We went straight into recording our first EP but the year that followed was vital to us developing as musicians and friends. For those who haven’t heard of us before, we’d say we are a sarcastic, down to earth group of girls who want to play music and write relatable and catchy tracks you can throw your head around to.

You’ve just released your debut album, how long was this one in the making?

We started working on our album after the release of our EP The Lost. We’d been working on a lot of music before we went into the studio, but it wasn’t until we went into the recording process that we were hit with the realisation that we were steering in a direction we weren’t happy with musically. Before ‘I’m The Sin’ started to unfold and we did a week of writing and re-working, we were a bit lost. We learnt so much in those four weeks in the studio; it was a massive learning experience for all of us not only as musicians and writers but as professionals in the music industry. There’s so much that happens behind the scene that a lot of musicians who are starting out aren’t aware of; until they really start pushing for their band to be more than just a hobby and more of a career path. It’s not always fun and games when you want to do what you love for a living. Paperwork still sucks! [laughs].

Why did you choose to release this particular track?

Sins was a track and sound  we weren’t expecting to have on the album at all but ended up being one of the most powerful and recognisable on the record. It’s very moody and has a different vibe to the rest of the tracks which we dig and think people will get in to. It begins as a slow dark song but then always surprises people when the chorus’ kick in.

When you go about writing, is it a collaborative effort? Or is there a main songwriter amongst you?

Essentially Lizi (vocals, guitar) is the main songwriter, but we all contribute in different ways. However, if someone is inspired by something in particular we’ll collectively work on it until it becomes a track that we’re happy with. After that we’ll take it into the studio and perfect it with our producer.

Who do you count as your biggest, most left field influence that no one would ever pick?

This is so different for each of us! If we had to choose, it would be a mix of Imagine Dragons and Fleetwood Mac.

How’d the tour with Tonight Alive come about?

It was quite a surprise to us! Thought that surely it was some sort of scam email until we double checked that the email address wasn’t something along the lines of “you’vebeenpunked@dumbass.net” and it was actually legitimate. We’re incredibly grateful and so excited to be a part of this tour.

What are your plans for 2018?

Not only are we heading back into the studio but we also get to be a part of some really awesome things that we can’t announce yet. It’s always been full steam ahead over at the TBM house and next year will most likely be no different!
