ALTER BRIDGE // Feeling Young Again

Alter bridge

ALTER BRIDGE at The Enmore Theatre, Sydney – 4th April, 2017

Every so often you get the chance to go back to your youth, and covering Alter Bridge did exactly that. Never did I think that at the ripe age of 25 would I photograph a group that had such defining influence of my teen years as Alter Bridge did.

Devastated after a Creed breakup, no one knew what was going to happen after their disbandment in 2004, but Alter Bridge soon followed and made it all okay again. Growing up in the US, Alter Bridge ads were everywhere, whether it be on television or on the side of buildings throughout the country.

Would the Enmore Theatre be big enough to hold the passionate masses of fans? This would be the first time that Aussie audiences heard tracks from their newest release, The Last Hero. Don’t get me wrong, The Last Hero is a stellar release, but a little part of me wanted to hear One Day Remains in its entirety. Myles, Mark, Brian, and Scott came on just a touch after nine, and age has been nothing but kind to the crew. They looked like the Alter Bridge of old that I’d grown up with, and it was refreshing to see they are still doing well. Not only did they still look like the youthful Florida bunch, but also sounded like it.

Bringing me back to the days of CD players and chequered Vans, Alter Bridge put on a hell of a show. It’s clear that the band continues to love what they do, as whenever Myles stepped up to the mic it seemed as though he couldn’t be happier. Playing melodic tunes spanning their entire existence, Alter Bridge never stopped tearing through the tunes, and giving it everything they had, plus a little extra.

It’s hard not to feel a little nostalgic at a gig like this. It’s been thirteen years since this four piece formed, now that makes me feel a little old, actually a lot old, but oh well. Looking around I saw a crowd of people that would’ve been similar to me in middle school, and it’s slightly comforting knowing that we’re still out there. We may be a little aged, but still there supporting a band that got us through our youth and questionable eyebrow piercings. You’ve surely listened to The Last Hero by now, but if not, march on down to your local CD store and pick up a copy to feel young again.

Full disclosure, I still listen to the same music as I did when I was in middle school. This may still include a majority of Alter Bridge, Creed, and My Chemical Romance.
