ADVOCATES // Hysteria Premiere Advocates ‘The Complex Truth’ EP

We love young bands here at Hysteria. There’s no pretense that they’re better than anyone else. One such band is Advocates. Hysteria are proud to premiere the stream for their EP The Complex Truth because they’re willing to admit they’re starting from the bottom.

“Someone’s gotta pay for it, unfortunately it doesn’t pay for itself yet!” That’s the band’s singer Detlyn Raven. He gets that in order to get somewhere in this industry, you’d better be sure you can work hard enough to do it. “It’s taken such a long time because this entire year we’ve been touring. We’ve been recording and finishing up the writing process during that time. The whole build up was a long process but it’s finally over.”

It’s very exhausting but we’ve had heaps of old fans messaging us telling us how excited they are for our new stuff. This release was always planned to say ‘this is the beginning of Advocates

According to the singer, this is the “first proper release” that the band have dropped since they relocated from New Zealand to Australia. That’s right. Not only do they have to start from scratch, but they’ve already been there, done that, and are willing to do it again. “To us it’s a super big deal to release this because we’ve poured our heart and soul into this EP. There are more Australian members in the band than NZ ones now.” Raven says that he’s well aware of the fanbase that the band have across the sea with their previous releases, but it’s time for the group to move on from their old material. “We kind of cut ties with the previous songs and made pretty much a brand new band. It’s very exhausting but we’ve had heaps of old fans messaging us telling us how excited they are for our new stuff. This release was always planned to say ‘this is the beginning of Advocates’.”

The Complex Truth is dark and heavy, just how we like it. “It’s our raw and honest take on certain issues that plague our world at the moment,” says the singer. “Some of us have experienced them, but we definitely acknowledge that we are trying to sell the song and get the emotion out of people. For us it’s more about getting our frustration out there, taking that weight off our shoulders and just forget about what’s happened in the past. Even helping friends who are going through it right now.” Take a trip through the world of Advocates. It’s a brutal one, but a worthy journey.

Catch Advocates’ final show of 2016 with Make Them Suffer this Saturday at the Northcote Social Club.

The Complex Truth EP is out this Thursday December 8.
